caffeine: how much is really in your cup, and how it works

there are more myths around caffeine than around anything else in coffee. let's go through it calmly, without the extremes of «coffee is poison» and «coffee is a superfood»: what it is, how it works, how much is really in a cup, and what it depends on.

how caffeine works

through the day a molecule called adenosine builds up in the brain — it binds to its receptors and produces the feeling of drowsiness and fatigue. caffeine is structurally similar to adenosine and occupies those receptors without activating them — it temporarily «mutes» the fatigue signal. it's important to understand: caffeine doesn't ADD energy, it only hides tiredness. when it wears off, all the accumulated adenosine hits at once — hence the familiar «crash» and the urge for another cup.

half-life and sleep

caffeine clears slowly: its half-life is roughly 4–6 hours (highly individual, depending on genetics, age, some medications). that means a coffee at 4pm still leaves about a quarter of the dose in your system by midnight. even if you «fall asleep fine», caffeine worsens the depth of your sleep. the practical takeaway: your last full coffee is best 6–8 hours before sleep at the latest.

myth 1: dark roast is «stronger»

in fact the opposite: for the same weight of BEANS, a dark roast has even slightly less caffeine (some is destroyed by the longer, hotter roast), though the difference is small. a dark roast's «strength» is about flavour (richness, bitter-edged depth, body), not the caffeine dose. a caveat: if you measure by scoops, dark beans are lighter (they lost more moisture), so a scoop of dark may hold a few more beans — but that's about dosing method, not the roast level itself.

myth 2: espresso has the most caffeine

a SERVING of espresso usually has LESS caffeine than a full filter cup — simply because of the volume. a single espresso ~30 ml: about 60–80 mg. a filter cup ~250 ml: about 120–200 mg. espresso is more concentrated per millilitre, but there are few millilitres. the sensation of espresso's «strength» is flavour and concentration on the tongue, not the dose.
